Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Usage instructions
You may use GenAI tools under the following guidelines:
Permitted Actions:
Idea Review: You may use GenAI tools to check your independent idea generation.
Suitable prompts following this principle might include:
“Are the following work tasks suitable for consideration in the Work Breakdown Structure of a single storey building etc.”
“Is the following sequencing appropriate for …”
Prohibited uses:
Outsourcing Report Writing
The following prompt actions are prohibited:
Copying and pasting (including reproducing) any part of the assignment brief into an AI tool prompt field.
Uploading assessment or course materials to an AI tool.
Outsourcing Idea Generation
You should develop your ideas independently of AI first. Do not use AI to start your assignment.
Outsourcing Research and Evidence Gathering. Output from GenAI is derived from and produced from existing sources. GenAI output should not be:
Referenced as an information source.
Used in quotations in your work.
Copied in part or whole any way into your work.
Plagiarism: Ensure all sources are properly cited, including any course materials and AI tools, following appropriate referencing style. [https://libguides.newcastle.edu.au/AI-tools/using#s- lib-ctab-22539554-4]
Assignment Brief
You are a construction manager working for a construction firm. One of the projects you are working on is the Multi Arts Pavilion (MAP) in Speers Point, NSW. Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a construction plan report for the client for the “construction stage” of the project.
You have been provided a full set of construction drawings including architectural, structural, mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical drawing. The drawings can be accessed at: Canvas Course Site >Assignments> Assessment 4. In the report you are required to:
develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for the MAP project and produce a Gantt chart for the WBS. Please ensure that the sequencing of the activities follow construction logic. Outline the various phases of the construction stage; for example, site preparation, substructure, superstructure, etc. develop sectional drawings of the MAP building, covering structural and MEP elements.
Present the report professionally and use appropriate citation and referencing techniques, as required.
Assignment Checklist
Please structure up your report using the following:
1. Table of contents
Develop a Table of Contents which outlines the sections in your report.
2. Executive Summary
Include an introduction to the client outlining what the report contains and a summary of key findings and/or any recommendations
3. Cross section drawings
Develop two (2) cross section drawings and indicate where the section cutting planes are. Please do not replicate, copy, or use existing sections in the MAP drawings provided to you; you will need to create your own sectional drawings for this report.
Each section should cut through the entire building, i.e from the roof through to the foundation.
The sections must cover structural elements and MEP work.
The drawings are to be your own original work. You may refer to textbooks and other resources but do not copy directly from these sources.
The drawings can be hand sketched or developed using a program such as CAD. You are not to use GenAI to develop your drawings.
The drawings will need to include dimensions and annotations.
4. Work Breakdown Structure
Develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) which identifies and organises the construction stage of the project and produce a Gantt chart for the WBS.
Identify work/sub work tasks and activities involved in the “Construction Stage” which should cover site preparation, building structure and MEP works.
The WBS should cover level 3 in detail (use at least 3 words to describe the activity)
Include these tasks/activities in a Gantt chart format (use the template provided) and indicate the sequence of these tasks/activities described in Work Breakdown Structure.
Include a brief outline of how the timeframes for activities were developed based on the course materials or from other sources (1-2 sentences)
Please use the Assignment 3_Multi Arts Pavilion Project template (Microsoft Excel format) for the Gantt chart and project sequencing, which is available via Canvas course site>Assignments>Assessment4. The minimum start date for the project should be 1st August 2021.
5. Conclusion
Summarise your report.
All of these elements need to be compiled into a cohesive report.
You can choose to use any referencing system as long as it is used consistently (for eg. APA, Harvard, etc). Think about the general readability of your report. If you show a diagram or table, there should be at least a small explanation of what it shows. If referring to another part of the report, best to use numbered sections to make this easier.
File size:
The file size can be an issue when submitting through Turnitin. You are advised to review the size of your file ensuring it is below 1.0MB. It is important to note that electronic submissions will be marked in their electronic form for this course. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that any files submitted are in a Microsoft/Mac Word or Adobe format or are readable or compatible with these formats. THERE WILL BE NO HARDCOPY SUBMISSIONS!
A final comment – please consider the marking rubric, and in particular the weightings of the elements before commencing the assignment.
