Instructions for the Student

Workplace Observation Assessment provides an opportunity for your supervisor to observe you completing a task that asks you to apply the skills and knowledge you have acquired. Use the following tips to help you complete the activity:

Review the task thoroughly before you get started, and make sure you understand what you are required to do. If you have any questions, discuss them with your supervisor

Consider WHS and always work safely

When being observed by your supervisor, clearly demonstrate your skills

Please note:

Certain parts of the task must be completed in your own time; however, the timelines must be adhered to at all times.

When video-recording two (2) students in the workplace for this unit, you must ensure that the students’ face is de-identified or not visible.

Instructions for the Workplace Supervisor

Guidance to supervisors about this task

This assessment aims for students to demonstrate that they can support the development of numeracy skills.

Arrangements for redoing the tasks

Where students do not correctly or adequately demonstrate the skills and knowledge required of this task, they will need to be given feedback. Depending on the level of their performance and the types of areas in which they did not show competence, you may:

Let them redo the task immediately after consideration of feedback

Request they undertake further learning and redo the task at a later date.

Discuss timeframes for reassessment with the student when you tell them the outcome of this roleplay

Please note: A qualified trainer and assessor will review and assess all the submitted comments and assessment evidence to determine the students' competence and abilities against the unit of competency requirements. A trainer and assessor will ensure each assessment has been sufficiently completed and determine the final assessment outcome.

Part 1: Support numeracy skills

Overview

For this task, you will be required to work with two (2) students to support numeracy learning through implementing support strategies. This part of the assessment is divided into three (3) sub-parts as follows with detailed instructions for each part:

Task 1.1: Consult & Plan – You will work with the teacher in your workplace to determine the two (2) students and plan to implement support strategies.

Task 1.2: Implement & Adjust – You will implement the plan with two (2) students and on at least one (1) occasion each, which will be observed by the Workplace Supervisor out of which one (1) occasion of implementing support activities for the student will be observed by the Assessor.

Task 1.3: Document Portfolio & Report – You will create a portfolio of documents related to the student's plans and report progress to the teacher.

Task 1.1 - Consult and Plan

Instructions

For this part of the Assessment Task, you must consult with the teacher to choose two (2) students that you can work with to support their numeracy skills.

The teacher will need to have the planning documents in relation to the numeracy requirements for these students that you can use whilst working with them.

The objective of this task is to establish a plan for the numeracy support of two (2) students.

You are required to follow the instructions provided below for three steps for Task 1.1

Step 1: Choose students

You will consult with the teacher in your workplace and determine two students that you can support for this task

You will ensure that you ask your workplace supervisor to complete Supervisor Confirmation Form and Supervisor Permission Form (both located below)

You will ensure that you ask the parent/family member of the two students to complete the CHCEDS037_Parental Consent Form (located in your course attachments).

Step 2: Access planning documents

You will ask the teacher for planning documents for each student to read and interpret information in relation to numeracy requirements

You are required to identify and access the current numeracy programs for two students using the programs your work placement school is utilising E.g., Mathematics Hub.

You will identify the resources that are required to support the numeracy programs based on the needs of two students

You will follow the confidentiality policies and procedures according to the requirements of your workplace and ensure that you handle student records accordingly

You will now prepare questions for a meeting with the teacher (In step 3) and use the Task 1.1 Meeting Minutes Template (below) to add the questions you will prepare for the meeting. The questions must relate to the following topics:

The systems and workplace templates for recording progress and results

The structure and guidelines of the numeracy program

Individual student needs

Resources to implement the program

Recommended strategies to support the numeracy program and individual needs.

Step 3: Meet with the teacher to discuss the plan

You will arrange a time to discuss the plans and questions developed in Step 2 for the following topics:

The systems and workplace templates for recording progress and results

The structure and guidelines of the numeracy program

Individual student needs

Resources to implement the program

Recommended strategies to support the numeracy program and individual needs.

Task 1.2 Implement and Adjust

Instructions

For this part of the Assessment Task, you must work with the two (2) students on one (1) occasion each to implement the plan to support their numeracy skills.

Your workplace supervisor will need to observe you during these interactions. They will need to complete the Observation checklist provided for Task 1.2.

On at least one (1) occasion, your assessor will observe you, by video, working with at least one (1) student. You will follow the planning documents and ensure you report back to the teacher about the student’s progress. The objective of this task is to implement the plan and provide support to two students.

You are required to follow the instructions provided below for two steps for Task 1.2

Step 1: Work with students

The Workplace Supervisor will observe you while you implement the numeracy support strategies to provide support to two (2) different students on at least one (1) occasion for each student out of which the implementation of support activities for the student will be observed by the Assessor on at least one (1) occasion.

Your Assessor will complete the CHCEDS037_Part 1 Video Recording Observation Checklist for Assessor.

You are required to video record the implementation of support activities for students on one (1) occasion. You will be required to complete the CHCEDS037_Video Recording Observation Submission Template with this assessment for recording the implementation of the support activities for students.

You will evaluate each student's numeracy ability against the program criteria

You will record the student’s progress and store the records of each student by maintaining confidentiality according to the Acorn College’s Confidentiality and Privacy Policy and Procedure. You will be required to ensure that you use digital media to record student’s progress for two students in your workplace. This will be an additional requirement other than the recording process used in your workplace which may be reports, observation templates, etc.

When recording

For this part of the Assessment Task, you are required to complete the provided journal (Part 1 Reflective Journal Template) to record your experiences. The objective of this task is to further demonstrate your capabilities in relation to supporting students' numeracy development.

You will also need to create a portfolio of documents related to the student’s plans, evaluate progress and report progress to the teacher. You will also meet with the teacher to discuss your evaluations of the numeracy program implementation.

Please note: Students must be de-identified from all documents compiled in the portfolio.

You are required to follow the instructions provided below for two (2) steps for Task 1.3:

Step 1: Document Portfolio and Report

(This step will partially be completed in your own time, and part of it will be completed in your workplace. For this step, you are required to evaluate progress and report progress to the teacher)

Tasks to be completed in your own time:

You will review all documentation and records of each student’s progress against the planning documents given by the teacher

You will now evaluate each student’s numeracy progress against the program criteria and write an evaluation summary (approximately 80-100 words). The evaluation summary covers the following key points:

Did the student meet the goals?

Were the numeracy skills and knowledge improved and how did you know this?

Complete this using the Task 1.3 Evaluation Summary Template (below).

Tasks to be completed in the workplace

You will meet with the teacher to discuss your reflections and the progress of each student’s progress against the program criteria

You will ensure student documents are stored correctly in line with the Acorn College’s confidentiality policies and procedures.

The teacher will complete the Observation Checklist

Step 2: Reflection

You will use the Part 1 Reflective Journal Template and complete the journal to record your experiences.

You must ensure that:

All questions must be answered

The Workplace Supervisor must sign the journal after you complete it.

The following evidence must be submitted for Task 1.3:
