Assignment Details

In this assignment, you can develop your presentation and communication skills by preparing and delivering a recorded presentation.

This assignment supports unit learning outcomes 3 and 4.

Use the following steps to get started in your assignment.

Step 1: Choose a social stigma

Choose a social stigma that intrigues you or captures your interest. The selected stigma must differ from the topic you covered in Assignment 1: Essay. Read through Assignment 2 Social stigmas to explore a compiled list. This list is by no means exhaustive but can assist you in selecting a social stigma for your presentation.

Please note that social attitudes towards these stigmas vary significantly from one culture to another, therefore, you must provide sufficient context when you discuss them. Be mindful of the potential impact on individuals or groups affected by the stigma.

Step 2: Create your presentation

You are to create a narrated and visually engaging presentation (e.g. PowerPoint) of 8–10 minutes in duration. To create a narrated PowerPoint presentation see the instructions in Narrated PowerPoint. (Swinburne Online, 2019).

Your presentation must:

define the stigma, discuss its significance, and describe the stigmatisation process concerning norms, cultural values, and belief systems

provide context with relevant statistics and real-life examples

explore social, cultural, and historical factors that contribute to the perpetuation of the stigma and investigate cultural and historical variations

apply relevant theories and conceptual models to analyse the social factors that shape the stigmatisation process

provide examples and illustrations that reveal the experiences of individuals or groups affected by the stigma or those who enforce the stigma

discuss social movements and advocacy efforts to challenge or reinforce the selected stigma

describe policy interventions or media campaigns that aim to remove or reinforce the stigma.

Step 3: Referencing

You must cite at least five academic sources in your presentation (academic references refer to peer-reviewed sources such as books, book chapters and journal articles). In addition to the five academic sources, you could cite non-academic but reputable sources such as government websites or reports from international organisations.

Include a reference list (referenced following APA 7th edition) on the last slide of your presentation. Sources also need to be cited on the respective slide where they are used. In addition to written references, mentioning the sources during your speech is essential. Review the American Psychological Association (APA) style guide for more information on how to reference correctly. You can also use the Referencing tool to help you.

Step 3: Submitting your presentation

Submit a copy of the final narrated PowerPoint presentation to the Turnitin submission point, further instructions available in the Submission details overview tab.
